The Culturele Raad Eelde has scheduled the screening of the film The Zone of Interest for Sunday, March 23rd. The film portrays the daily routine of camp commandant Rudolf Höss, living with his family near Auschwitz in a surreal nazi setting.
Rudolf Höss, played by Christian Friedel, is depicted indulging in normal family activities alongside his wife Hedwig, portrayed by Sandra Hüller, and their five children. Scenes include leisurely moments by the river, horseback riding with his son, and appreciating nature, oblivious to the invisible forced laborers nearby.
The film captures the Höss family's luxurious lifestyle and their obliviousness to the atrocities unfolding in the Auschwitz surroundings. The juxtaposition of their idyllic life with the horrors of the camp's extermination facilities highlights the banality of evil.
Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the film offers a chilling portrayal of the family's detachment from the reality of Auschwitz. Based on Martin Amis' book, the film won awards and critical acclaim. Catch the screening on March 23, 2025, at De Filmfabriek in Bunne.
